Top 5 Business Tools for the Health Coach

Okay Health Coaches. Why are you still fussing with websites and technology all day long when you should be helping people get healthy!?!?

If you wanted to fuss with a website all day long you would have become a website designer. But you chose health coaching because you are passionate about helping people discover the gift of health. Am I right or am I right?

So stop fussing right now. No more websites. Besides, didn't you know that a website for a health coach is about as income-producing as a doorknob? Maybe a meatball.

Sorry to break it to you friend, but websites are like sooooo last year. The truth is they don't work. If you can show me a health coach who's website converts visitors into paying customers I will give you $100.

Today I'm going to share with you the top 5 business tools I teach my students how to use in their business so they can free up their time with automation, scale for profitability and have the thriving health coaching practice they dream of.

Top 5 Business Tools

Tool #1 - ClickFunnels

Okay okay okay. So this is kiiiind of a website. Sort of. Not really. What is it exactly?

Its a website-like way of growing your business, based on the evidence that people don't buy from websites but they DO buy in sales funnels. When you have a sales funnel and you've tested and tweaked it so that its working (aka profitable) you can view your sales funnel like an ATM machine. Put a dollar in and get two dollars out.

Here's why. Once a visitor enters your sales funnel, you have them for life. That’s because the first step your funnel will be to collect their email address.

Once you have their email, you then start "pre-selling" about your product or service you want them to buy, mixed in with a bunch of great value of course. You're basically telling a story. Because facts tell, stories sell.

You can even use pre-built "soap opera sequence" which will build up their trust in you, and cause them to be more willing to take out their wallets and buy at some point in the funnel.

The next step in the funnel is to direct your email audience to a sales page. This is a special page that is designed to get people to buy. They often include an eye-catching headline, images or video, and bullet points describing the benefits that get the visitor excited and helps you close the sale.

Once they've hit the "Thank You" page, there are all kinds of magic tricks you can play to increase your sales volume and and retention. I'll save that for another post.

What's great about ClickFunnels is that creating all these pages is super intuitive and easy and can be done in a few minutes. You're creating a piece of real estate on the internet that is designed for a very specific and SINGULAR purpose. Compare that to your website, however, and I bet when you built your website you had ALL kinds of purposes and goals - a compelling about statement, convey your brand, showcase all the products you have for sale, give them a way to get in touch with you, give a popup in case they want to get on your email list, show all your social media links, put your instagram feed scrolling across the bottom. Aaaackk! Don't waste precious time and money investing in this and sending traffic to your website. Cool Feature #1: Funnel template blueprints

ClickFunnels was specifically designed to make it easy to create sales funnels while shielding you from the tricky technical stuff to set things up.

What I like is that the editor is very intuitive to use. Selecting components on the page and moving them where you want is very seamless. Text elements can be edited inline, and modifying any element’s properties can be done through the fly-out sidebar. And unlike many other editors out there, everything is organized in a logical way. You’re not spending a lot of time hunting for what you want to do.

Cool Feature #3: Awesome onboarding process

Wrapping your head around all that ClickFunnels can do may seem daunting at first. But this is helped by the most impressive on-boarding process I’ve seen in a software product.

When you first sign up, you’re presented with the 7-day challenge. It consists of 4 different games with each one having a number of steps to complete. Every step features a task and a short video clip of Russell explaining what you need to do to finish it.

I found the whole process to be incredibly valuable. It’s essentially an interactive tutorial where you learn how to use ClickFunnels itself and the philosophy and value of using the software for your own business. I highly recommend you go through it first when you sign up.

Tool #2 - ScheduleOnce

Stop wasting time going back and forth in text, email, phone, FB message, all over the place with your clients about their next appointment time! Hire yourself an assistant who puts your clients on your calendar in JUST those perfect spots that you want. For only $7/month you can have a killer booking engine that scales as your business grows. To start with the entry level pricing, you'll get just one Booking Page BUT you can put as many different types of calls on that page as you like.

What's a Booking Page? Its a page that you can either

  • Send your clients a URL or

  • Embed in your funnel.

Since I embed my Booking Page on my funnel, I only put one type of call there to make sure my potential clients don't have to make too many decisions.

I upgraded to the $19/month level in order to have multiple Booking Pages because I also needed a Booking Page to send to my existing clients where they could choose the type of interaction they want with me. For example:

  • One-on-one Coaching Session - 50 minutes

  • One-on-one Coaching Session - 10 minute check-in.

  • Grocery Shopping

  • Pantry Make-over

What's awesome about having multiple different types of calls available to my clients is that depending on which call type they choose, I can ask them different questions. For example on my "One-on-one Coaching Session - 50 minutes" I can ask in-depth questions about their goals for their session, what they accomplished since our last call, etc. I don't want to ask that for a 10 minute check-in, of course, but I do want them to be clear on what they need from me to get me on the phone for 10 minutes, so I ask them what is the one thing they need in our 10 minutes together. Makes it SUPER efficient when we do get on the phone. Maximizes value to them and minimized the amount of time I have to spend with them to help them along.

If you have a Maximize Value for them and Minimize Time for you, you are operating with a proper business mindset and running a profitable health coaching practice. Tool #3 - ActiveCampaign

Do not tell me you are still using Mail Chimp are you? Mail Chimp is for, well, chimps. Yes, I know its free. But you get what you pay for and seriously Mail Chimp is a royal pain in the you-know-what when it comes to doing tasks over and over again.

You can try ActiveCampaign out with a Free 14-day Trial and then upgrade to the $17/month version which is highly adequate for beginners with all the table stakes you could want:

  • unlimited list size

  • newsletters (duh)

  • email automation

I've since upgraded to the $49/month version since I wanted the additional features including:

  • CRM - custom notes on every user when I do a discovery call with them

  • SMS - sweet for quick fire-sale announcements

  • Custom Domain & Branding - a must have when you're ready to be taken seriously

  • Contact & Lead Scoring - absolutely required when your volumes start to get into the 4 digits.

My onboarding experience with ActiveCampaign was delightful. I started with the free trial, spoke with a sales person who helped me do the upgrade and then I had a free one-on-one session with a consultant who helped me migrate from Mail Chimp and get up and running in less than 45 minutes.

Ultimately, I evaluated other platforms too. InfusionSoft (yes I was prepared to plunk down over $100 a month!) and GetResponse (actually used them for a year before down grading to Mail Chimp. I also evaluated Aweber, ConvertKit and Constant Contact. Price and features were, of course, big factors. But honestly, the #1 factor at the end of the day was this:

  • Can I use this tool every day, all day long, for the rest of my life?

And hands down with ActiveCampaign, the answer was YES.

Usability, ease & speed of getting things done was the number #1 feature I was looking for. Because when business is up and running, price doesn't really matter. And they all have the same basic capabilities. So I was looking for an email marketing platform to be my BFF in biz. So it had better be pleasant to be around!!

Tool #4 - Canva

Even though I have wicked PhotoShop skills and use Pixelmator for many of my assets on a daily basis, I am not embarrassed to admit that I ALSO use Canva every single day. Yes, Canva is in that league.

Not only is Canva a super easy tool for creating images, its great for managing your growing bank of images too.

If you've never tried Canva, there's many reasons why people love it. Its free, its easy, powerful and collaborative.

Its Free

You can get started right away and use it FOREVER. For absolutely free. This is not one of those tools where you get excited because its free and then after using it for a while you realize that the features are so limited you have to either upgrade or find something else for free. Canva is literally 100% awesome and usable forever without paying a dime. Promise.

I actually did upgrade, however, to the $13/month version because I create SO MANY images with my logo and brand colors. With a paid version you can store some brand assets in your account so you don't have to type in the hex value of the color you want, upload your own (purchased) font that you use everywhere else in your brand, and also keep some logos hanging around easily accessible since you slam them in practically every single image you create.

Its Easy

Canva is super intuitive. Once you play around with image creation, you get the hang of how to create images in every social media dimension you need. You'll be adding text and headlines shapes and probably wasting a couple days getting lost in all the super fun things you can do. I love the way everything snaps and lines up. I can swivel and tilt, change the opacity, and go nuts with fonts and colors to never make the same image twice.

Its Powerful

The coolest thing about Canva is that you can manage ALL your images in one place. No Dropbox or Google Drive file system to worry about. And its all visual so you can scan through all the images you've ever created and find what you're looking for to make a copy and re-use work you've done in the past.

Its Collaborative

Once you get to that point where you've got a VA doing social media for you, you'll probably want a way to share images with her and have her show them to you before posting. With Canva you can create a team and share images with others to work on and then pop in and see what they've done. No more emailing around stuff for approval. (Gaaah!)

Tool #5 - Facebook Groups

If you are a health coaching building an online business, you should be using Facebook Groups as one of your PRIMARY strategies. If you are not in 30+ Facebook Groups where your niche hangs out, you are missing out, big time.

Not only do you need to be in groups, you need to have a group for so so so so many reasons.

Niche Marketing

Having a Facebook Group aligned with your brand allows you to attract and build an audience of your ideal clients. How many of you have gone around your local city or town and invited as many people as possible to come participate in your free Wellness Workshop at the Ramada Inn or the local Yoga Studio? Lots, I bet. And how many of you got any more than 10% or more of those attendees to sign up with you, follow you and hear your message every single day for weeks, months or years.

Not many, am I right? Well that is basically what you can do with a Facebook group so you don't have to exhaust yourself doing free in-person workshops anymore. BUT what's EVEN BETTER is that with Facebook Groups you are not inviting everyone and their brother (aka the general population), you are attracting only your ideal client from the population of your niche.

That's right, imagine that free workshop you did at the Ramada Inn was chock full of clones of your ideal client instead of a random smattering of moms & pops, friends of friends, etc.

Social Proof

Having a large Facebook Group helps you with social proof, so others know that you're someone worth paying attention to and hearing from. When your group members are engaging with you in the group, new group members see that and they want to be like them. Its human nature to be skeptical of new people, but when we see others milling around chatting feeling comfortable, it eases our skepticism and causes us to think "If everyone here thinks this is a cool place to hang out, it must be a cool place to hang out."

Free Leads

Everyone knows that people need to be exposed to a message, brand or product many times before they'll buy. We do not just plunk down our credit cards on first exposure. Which is why Facebook Groups are so perfect for the health coach because it allows us to give free value in the group about topics we're passionate about, and that repeated exposure warms our potential clients up to working with us, and trading money for the paid services we offer.
